Masculine Birthday Card

It’s the husband’s birthday so I whipped up this quick vintage style card for him.

Lots of people find it difficult to make masculine cards so I have a post here on my blog that can give you some ideas on what to use to make a masculine card. The reason I found this card quick to make is because I knew I wanted some earthy colours so I went for Cranberry Crisp, Buckeroo Blue and Chocolate Chip. I also figured that using lots of hardware on a card would be good for a man’s card which gave me the idea of doing a row of brads. Finally the choice of stamps wasn’t too hard as most of my stamps are floral or feminine so this one which is called ‘Stamp of Authenticity’ by Stampin’ Up! was an obvious choice.

To make this card I took some Kraft cardstock and stamped the Canvas background stamp using Cranberry Crisp ink. I purposely didn’t try to get a perfect image to give it a bit of a ‘rough’ look. I then stamped the small circle “Proof” stamp five times down the right hand side of the Kraft card using Chocolate Chip ink, punched some small holes into the middle of each circle and inserted the Antique Brass brads.
The library card from Stamp of Authenticity was stamped using Buckeroo Blue ink onto Confetti Cream cardstock, cut it out and roughed up the edges with a distressing tool and then edged it with Chocolate Chip ink by dragging the inkpad around the edges of the cardstock. I then stamped the words ‘happy’ and ‘birthday’ from the Everyday Flexible Phrases stamp set using Cranberry Crisp ink and stamped the husband’s name using Chocolate Chip ink with the Classic Alphabet stamp set. The ‘Authentic’ stamp was stamped with Chocolate Chip ink onto Buckeroo Blue cardstock – you can’t see it in the scan very well but I went around the perimeter with a perforating tool to add texture and interest. This was then cut out (just a couple of millimeters past the perforating) and attached to the library card using an Antique Brass spiral clip and mounted onto the Kraft card using double-sided foam tape. The bottom of the Kraft card was stamped with “100 percent” and the ‘original barcode’ (both from the Stamp of Authenticity stamp set) using Chocolate Chip ink. The whole piece was then layered onto a folded piece of Cranberry Crisp cardstock.

Sympathy Card – Lovely as a Tree

I have a real love/hate relationship with sympathy cards. On the one hand I know (from personal experience) that they provide real comfort to the recipient – just knowing that someone is thinking of them but on the other it means that I was close enough to the person who passed or the bereaved to send a card. Unfortunately this is one of those heart ripping cards where someone too young lost their lives. It was only several days ago that the General Manager of Stampin’ Up! Australia, Dave Abbott passed away and left a hole in many people’s lives. He was one of those remarkable people that everyone genuinely thought the world of.

To make this card I started with a piece of watercolour paper and I stamped the row of trees from the Stampin’ Up! stamp set called ‘Lovely As A Tree‘ using Jet Black Stazon Ink. Now I’ve probably raved about this stamp set before but I’ll rave about it again, it’s extremely versatile and can be used for many occasions – the single tree in this set (not shown here) is also perfect for Christmas so I’ll post a Christmas card with that stamp soon. Back to the cardmaking, after stamping the trees I coloured them in using an aquabrush (this is a brush which has a barrel that you fill with water) and some watercolour crayons. The grass was lightly coloured with chalk and the sky has just a touch of colour, barely visible but just enough to take the starkness of the paper. This stamped and coloured piece was then layered onto some brushed copper cardstock and then Chocolate Chip cardstock.

The background is Kraft cardstock which has been sponged around the edges with Creamy Caramel ink and then stamped with the French Script background, again using Creamy Caramel ink. The right hand background is Old Olive cardstock stamped with Old Olive ink using the Crackle background. I went around the Old Olive cardstock dragging the Old Olive inkpad not just around the edges but also very lightly over the top of the Crackle stamping. These two backgrounds were layered onto some Chocolate Chip cardstock and the stamped trees mounted on top using double-sided foam tape.

To finish off, I wrapped some Chocolate Chip ribbon around the piece threading a Hodgepodge ribbon charm and securing the ends of the ribbon with two Antique Brass brads. This whole piece was then mounted onto a folded piece of Old Olive cardstock.

Cherish Baby Card

I had some really exciting news recently that a friend of mine and her husband are expecting a baby. When I first started stamping some 7 years ago, I started by making lots of baby cards – I don’t know if it was just me because I had babies or if lots of people start by making baby cards. Anyway, I still have a heap of them left and although I do still like them I couldn’t resist buying this stamp set to make a card for my friends. I must say that this stamp set, Wild About You by Stampin’ Up! isn’t my usual style or the sort of stamps I’d ever buy but I decided to go ahead since I was sure I’d find uses for it for other occasions. So here’s my card, simple but sweet I think.

Cherish baby.jpg
I don’t know what sex the baby will be so I decided to go with green and yellow. To make this card I simply stamped the giraffe stamp (my friend loves giraffes) using Certainly Celery ink on Whisper White cardstock. I then used a glue pen to ‘colour-in’ the spots and poured glitter on top to give the giraffe some sparkle. The giraffe’s eye and mouth seemed a bit stark white so I coloured them in with a Barely Banana marker. This image was then layered onto some Barely Banana cardstock, Certainly Celery cardstock and patterned paper.  By the way, I was really excited to find this paper in my stash, I never had any use for it but I was thrilled that it seemed to be just perfect for this card… now I know why I hoard patterned paper! Lastly I layered the whole piece onto a folded piece of Confetti Cream cardstock which I think you can just see the flecks on the card in this photo. To finish off, I stamped the word “Cherish” from the ‘Warm Words’ stamp set in Versamark and heat embossed with silver embossing powder. The word ‘Cherish’ was punched out using a large oval punch, edged with Certainly Celery marker and then attached to the card with some Stampin’ Dimensionals foam mount. I’ll list the products below to make it easy to see what I’ve used but if you have any questions or would like to purchase any of these products then please contact me on angelasargeant@gmail.com
