What came first? The stamp or the colour?

Thought it was time to answer another question from one of my blog readers.  Last month I got an interesting question from Val, who asked:

When sitting down to make a card, to you select stamp set first, or colours to use first?

Great question Val!  If I’m doing a card to give to someone I’ll start with the stamps because I want to match up the image with the occasion.  For example, with the recent birthday cards I made for my sons, I picked the stamp images that I thought suited their personalities.  After I pick the stamp I try to choose colours that will match the mood of the card.  However, if I’ve just bought some new patterned paper and I’m very excited to use it, then I’ll pick the matching colour cardstock to go with the papers then pick stamps that I think will suit.

Recently I was commissioned by a magazine to make a heap of cards – their request was for ‘flowers in summer colours’ – in this case I started with the colours (Red, pink, orange) and then picked stamps that I felt would suit that funky colour combination.  The stamps I picked were  Stampin’ Up!’s Eastern Blooms – not something I’d immediately pick bright colours for but thought that I could give the stamps a really different look using those colours.  If you’d like to see the end result they will be published in Issue 18 of Creative Cardmaking & Papercraft magazine, on sale 22nd May 2009.

Thanks again for your question Val.  Actually, I’d like to ask that question of all my readers… what do you start your card with first, rubber stamp or colours?

  1. Thanks for the insight into your cardmaking, I always find it interesting to hear how other people do it :)
I’m the same…it just depends on what I’m making the card for…if it’s a colour challenge then obviously the colours come first and I find a stamp set that *goes with them*, but if it’s a sketch then I usually pick out the stamps that will fit the sketch and then decide on colour. If it’s a card for a special occasion like a birthday then I start with the stamps and decide the colours based on what that person likes. And when I’m just making cards for fun I’ll often start with the DSP and then go from there.
Thanks for making me think about that…I’m looking forward to hearing what other people do :)

  2. Hi Anglea. I start firstly with a mini meltdown :) , then usually the stamps. I am still finding my feet with this whole SU juggernaut….so I choose the stamps I think will suit and then choose the colours that will compliment their personality. I am not game enough to try the challenges yet (but love looking at those who do) and can get inspiration from the weirdest places….but hey…it works for me!!
    Have a great Easter!!

  3. hmmm usually the stamps, but sometimes a ‘look’ or colour combination. I also love to hear how everyone gets a card together. Who can’t start with a blog/gallery search though!!! LOL I often have a look to firm my fuzzy ideas into something I can use…..love the boys cards….such cute cards for cute kids!

  4. if it’s a card for an occasion then it is the stamp to suit the theme, but if it’s just a card then it can often be the paper or the colours I want to use. I may case a card but often that completly changes as i assemble the card, and other times I just try to make up a card as I go along, not always the best way to go.
